Pimp My Ride

Pimp My Ride is a popular television show that is all about revamping cars. It is produced by MTV and hosted by rapper Xzibit. There is another similar show that is aired in Europe called Trick My Truck which feature hip hop artist Lil’ John and Fat Joe as the hosts. The American version of the show that airs on MTV is restricted to contestants who are from the Los Angeles area in the United States.

Each episode of Pimp My Ride features a car that is badly in need of being restored. The car is presented as a challenge to a group of young me aged anywhere from 18-28 – as a vehicle that not only needs to be optimized in terms of performance and speed but also an art object that needs to be as blinged out to please the show’s ostentatious host.

An episode of Pimp My Ride usually starts with one of the show’s participants offering up a car to be “pimped” on the show. Part of this segment features the rapper Xzibit making fun of the car and promising to give it an extreme makeover.

After examining the car, Xzibit takes the cars to a custom body shop to be decked out in rapper style. In the first four seasons the cars were customized by West Coast Customs Company (WCC.) In season five Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) took over the show. Most of the show features footage of the shop team tinkering with the components and rebuilding the interior and interior and exterior from square one.

However Pimp My Ride is not just about decorating the car. A caveat is that the car must suit the owner’s personality. Each car is described as a custom "pimp", tailored to the personalities and interests of the owners. For example, in one episode a professional bowler had a ball washer installed in his truck. In another episode a surfer got a full size dryer attached to the back of his Volkswagen van.

Yet another passion in Pimp My Ride is to deck it out with as much chrome and as many toys a possible including accessories, chrome, tires and rims, and internal electronics (even, and especially, DVD players, video games, big screens and all kinds of unusual and top of the line gadgets). In some cases the alterations to the car are cosmetic and in others the motor is replaced in order to gratify the participant’s need for speed. Some of the beat up cars on the show has been bestowed with entire engines with new high performance motors. Customization and extra gifts usually total around US$20,000 for the show’s car owning participant.

At the end of an episode of Pimp My Ride, a car is revealed to its owner, as well as all the details of the renovation and the custom features; in addition, the participant is usually given a prize that is somehow related to the car or the owner's hobby.
