Getting A Great Car Paint Job

Car paint is not something amateurs should mess with. You should make sure that you take your car to a professional to get it repainted. Here are a few tips to help you get the best paint job done possible.

First of all make sure that the body shop that you have selected uses a conditioner on the car’s metal before applying any car paint. This is like a primer but it is also a bit of a cleaner. It works on an enzymatic level to help rid the metal of any bumps caused by rust and corrosion. Some car paint shops call this type of primer a “self-etching” car paint primer. High quality products like this are the Eliminator by Moron and the URO Primer-Filler by Dupont.

You want to make sure that the body shop is not using putter or lacquer based fillers to fill in scratches and corrosive marks on your car’s metal body. These products are a temporary fix that are like band-aids that shrink after the car paint is applied. Before you know it the original corrosion marks and scratches will also be evident beneath the new paint job. If the car needs to be welded before it is fixed special primers also need to be used to make sure that the car paint looks even in the end.

The job does not end after the car paint is applied. You will also want to apply some kind of finish. The best choice for finishing off a car are the new two part polyurethane finishes that are smooth, shiny and have a depth and richness to them that makes them seem like hard lacquer. These finishes are more expensive but well worth the investment as they can make an ordinary car paint job look fantastic.

If you only need to touch up a dent or scratch on your car then you can apply the car paint yourself. Still always keep in mind that there is less likelihood of complete satisfaction if you do it yourself. This is because so much about car painting is about chemicals and the way they react with metals and anything sitting on top of the metal such as grease, dirt or moisture. You really need to know what you are doing before you apply car paint.

If you do decide to do it yourself then you need to clean up the area that you want to touch up with dish soap and water and then dry it with a clean cloth. You can then use a car paint thinner to remove any oils left over from waxing the car and street grime. If the area that you want to apply car paint to is rusty then you should sand it with sandpaper and treat it with rust remover. Gently apply paint to the area that needs treating, let it dry for about ten minutes and then apply another count. Apply a finishing third coat after about 45 minutes to achieve the best results. Whatever you do don’t rub the car paint in as you may mar the finish around the very area of the car’s coating that you are trying to fix.
